Le Mars baseball and softball face North again
SIOUX CITY — Just a day after facing Sioux City North and winning by a run-rule score, the Le Mars baseball team was back in action against the Stars for a Missouri River Activities Conference doubleheader on Thursday.
These games were much more competitive than Wednesday’s contest. The Bulldogs won the first game 4-2 and dropped the second game 5-4. Both games were decided in the seventh inning.
Le Mars scored two runs in the top of the seventh to win the first game of the doubleheader. The Bulldogs scored one in the second and another in the fourth before North tied the game in the home half of the fifth with two runs.
Brayden Dreckman led the team with two hits in the contest. Ayden Hoag, Evan Jalas and Kole Carpenter all had RBIs for the team.
Teagen Kasel pitched a complete game win for the Bulldogs. The two runs he allowed were unearned as he finished with five hits and four walks given up throughout the course of the game. He finished with five strikeouts.
The nightcap went to the Stars on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-4 win. Le Mars gave up runs in each of the first three innings as they fell behind 4-0. The team rallied for three runs in the fourth and brought the tying run home in their final at-bat in the top of the seventh prior to the Stars winning in the bottom of the inning.
Le Mars was held to three hits in the contest, a triple from Cal Eckstaine and singles from Dreckman and Carter Baumgartner. Those three also reached once each on walks. Baumgartner led the team with 2 RBI and Hoag added another RBI for the team.
Carpenter gave up the first four runs, one of which was earned, as he went two innings. He struck out two while allowing four hits and three walks. Jalas ended up taking the loss in relief despite a solid performance on the mound with five strikeouts. He gave up just one run on four hits, two walks and a hit batter in his 4 2/3 innings on the hill.
After splitting the two games, Le Mars had a record of 9-13 overall and 9-11 in the conference. North’s record stood at 6-19 overall and 4-15 in conference games.
Softball sweeps Stars
SIOUX CITY — The Le Mars softball team followed up their makeup game win against Sioux City North on Wednesday with two more wins against the Stars on Thursday in Missouri River Activities Conference action.
The Bulldogs won the first game by a 4-2 score. Averie Morgan scored the first run for the Bulldogs as she reached with a walk and came around to score a few batters later on an error in the third inning.
The team added three more the next inning. Brenna Leraas led off the frame with a single and scored on an error in the field off the bat of Charlie Grosenheider. Mackenzie Kunkel followed with a base hit. Morgan reached on an error which scored another run and Libby Leraas knocked home a run with a base hit.
Those four runs stood up through the rest of the game. The Stars did get two runs as Ataviah Van Buren scored twice, first on a solo home run in the fifth and then as she scored on a double from Natalie Rasmussen after reaching on an error in the seventh.
Lizzie Koonce pitched the win for the Bulldogs. She gave up one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out three.
The Bulldogs blasted the Stars in the second game, winning 20-1 in three innings. The team scored five in the first, 10 in the second and five more in the third.
The team capitalized on several North errors along with getting several hits. The Bulldogs batted around several times in the game. Le Mars was also able to get playing time for several other players after pulling their starters.
Kylie Hofmann pitched the win for the team, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks. She ended with one strikeout.
Le Mars improved to 14-8 overall and 11-4 in the conference with the wins. North dropped to 6-14 overall and 5-10 in conference games at the end of the night.
