Akron-Westfield girls golf advances to state

ANITA — The Akron-Westfield girls golf team is headed back to state after a few years hiatus. The Westerners had the low team score at Crestwood Hills Golf Course in a Class 1A regional final meet Wednesday.

The Akron-Westfield girls had made the state tournament for six straight years from 2014 through 2019. The team missed out in 2020 due to the cancellation of the season and then finished fourth last season in the regional final.

The Westerners shot a 378 for the day while Council Bluffs St. Albert joins them at state with a second place 383.

Sidney’s Avery Dowling shot a 79 to lead the field by nine strokes as they finished just two strokes behind St. Albert for the second team spot.

The Westerners had two individuals make the top six which move on to state. Taryn Wilken led the team with a 90 across the 18 holes which was the fourth lowest score of the day. She shot a 42 on her first nine of the par-36 course with even pars on four of the holes. She scored a 48 on the second nine with two evens.

Natalie Nielsen was next with a 93 which tied for fifth. Her day started with a 45 which included three even pars and ended with a 48 which included two even-par holes.

Katie Johnson was just a stroke behind Nielsen with a 94. She tallied a 47 on each nine and had one even-par hole on each nine.

The last counting score of the day for the team was a 101 from Ellie Martinsen. She shot a 53 on the front nine and a 48 on the back nine with two even-par holes.

Josie Smith shot a 103 and Allie Swoyer ended with a 116 as scores which were not used towards the team score. Smith shot a 49 on the front nine which included a birdie on the par-4 seventh. She finished with a 54 on the back nine. Swoyer had matching 58 tallies on each nine.

The Westerners will compete at the 1A state tournament to be held May 26-27 at American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

Team scores: Akron-Westfield 378, Council Bluffs St. Albert 383, Sidney 385, West Monona 405, Woodbury Central 408, Essex 423.
