Le Mars girls tennis beats Heelan, falls to SL-O in regional tourney

LE MARS ó The Le Mars Community girls tennis team hosted part of the Class 1A regional team tennis tournament on Saturday.

The Bulldogs opened play with their Missouri River Activities Conference rival Bishop Heelan. The Crusaders had won in the conference clash during the regular season by a 6-3 score. Le Mars was able to avenge that loss with a 5-2 win over Heelan on Saturday.

No. 1 singles player Claire Blezek won her match by a 6-4, 6-2 score after Katie Cunningham picked up a win in straight sets earlier. Payton Wright gave the Bulldogs another win at No. 2 while Hannah Albrecht claimed the No. 3 match in a tiebreaker by a 10-5 score.

The teamís fifth win came in doubles play where Blezek and Wright won by a 6-2, 6-1 score to seal the win and advance to the next round.

Awaiting the Bulldogs in the next round was No. 3 ranked Spirit Lake-Okoboji. Le Mars was able to score a few game wins, but not enough to win any sets as they fell 5-0 with all of the results being 2-0 scores.

Blezek faced Catherine Straus at the No. 1 spot and fell to the individual state qualifier by a 6-0, 6-1 score.

Wright dropped her contest to Taylor Schneider by a 6-1, 6-4 score at the No. 2 spot.

At No. 3 singles, Albrecht lost by a 6-3, 6-2 score to Abbie Oleson.

Emma Straus wrapped up the No. 4 slot with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lexi Hurd.

Spirit Lake-Okoboji completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-4 win for Mikayla Mingus over Cunningham.

Spirit Lake-Okoboji advanced to play Spencer in the regional championship.

Le Mars concluded the season with a 4-4 dual record this season. The team is set to graduate Blezek, Albrecht, Cunningham, Kylie Biggs, and Kylie Hansen from this yearís roster.
