A-W girls golf advances to 1A regional final

DUNLAP ó The Akron-Westfield girls golf team fired the low round at the Dunlap Golf & Country Club on Friday to advance to the Class 1A regional final.

The Westerners finished with a 402 to finish 20 strokes below the other two teams which advanced, host Boyer Valley along with Woodbury Central.

Natalie Nielsen led the Westerners with a 96 which was just a stroke behind the top two individuals of the day, Maci Miller of Boyer Valley and Maddie Schultz of Woodbury Central. Nielsen shot a 47 on the first nine and a 49 on the second nine for her total.

Katie Johnson tied for the sixth place spot with her 101. She shot a 48 going out and a 53 coming in. Just a stroke behind her for the third score on the team was Taryn Wilken who had identical nine-hole scores of 51 for her 102 total. Josie Smith finished off the team scoring for the Westerners with a 103. She shot a 49 going out and a 54 coming in.

The Westerners did not use a 112 from Ellie Martinsen or a 120 from Allie Swoyer towards their team score.

Hinton finished fourth in the team scoring with a 445.

Mia Fleckenstein had the best individual score for the team with a 103, just two strokes behind the sixth place scores which advance as individuals.

Kenedi Spies had the next score for the team with a 109 followed by a 113 for Brooklyn Geddes for their third score. Addison Kovarna rounded out the teamís score with a 120. Non-counting scores were a 121 from Hailey Rosenbaum and a 131 from Makenzie Peirce.

Rosenbaum and Spies graduate off this yearís Hinton team.

Team scores: Akron-Westfield 402, Woodbury Central 422, Boyer Valley 422, Hinton 445, Riverside 473, Incomplete teams - Lawton-Bronson, River Valley.
