Gehlen boys golf beats MMCRU, competes in home tournament
MARCUS ó The Gehlen Catholic boys golf team traveled to face MMCRU in a War Eagle Conference match on Friday. The Jays came away with the win as they shot a 160 compared to MMCRUís 183.
Gehlenís Gabe Wiltgen shot an even-par round of 36 for the day as he was the overall medalist. Teammate Dawson Barthole shot two-over par with a 38 on the day. Landen Reuter finished with a 42 as the third in the top three for the Jays.
MMCRUís Preston Astidias was next on the leaderboard with a 43. Teammate Brayden Olsen shot a 44 which matched Gehlenís Carson Sitzmann in what was the final counting score for the Jays.
Gehlenís two scores not used on the day were a 48 from Elias Sitzmann and a 55 from Cam DeRocher.
While MMCRUís 183 wasnít low enough to get a win over Gehlen, it was good enough to beat Trinity Christian who was also in attendance. The Jays and Tigers did not compete head-to-head as they met earlier this spring in a conference dual.
Trinityís Alec De Boer was the overall medalist with a 41, but the Royals had the next five scores on the leaderboard. Astidias was the runner-up with his 43 followed by Olsenís 44.
Haven Hollinshead shot a 47 for the teamís third score and Noah Galles rounded out the counting four with a 49.
MMCRU did not use a 50 from Bryce Tentinger or a 57 from Owen Schroeder.
LE MARS ó The Gehlen Catholic boys golf team hosted the 2nd Annual Jays Boys Classic at Willow Creek Golf Course on Saturday.
Competitors had to deal with gusty winds throughout the competition which featured the host school along with Boyden-Hull, West Lyon and Lawton-Bronson.
Boyden-Hull shot the low score of the day with a 311. Gehlen was a distant second with a 352 which was 10 strokes better than third place West Lyon. Lawton-Bronson ended with a 426 for the day.
Boyden-Hull had the top three individuals on the day. Brothers Drew and Trey Van Roekel tied with 75 scores across the 18 holes for the top spot on the leaderboard. On the second tiebreaker hole, Drew was able to shoot a birdie to claim the overall medalist spot.
Dawson Leusink of Boyden-Hull took third with a 78. Gehlenís Dawson Barthole was fourth overall with an 80. He had the best round of the day across the nine holes coming in with a 36. He had a 44 going out. Barthole birdied three of the holes, the most of any golfer on the day.
Gehlen had two others make the top 10 which were considered part of the All-Tournament team. Landen Reuter was eighth with an 86 and Elias Sitzmann finished 10th with a 91.
Gabe Wiltgen shot a 95 to tie for 12th.
Other Gehlen scores included even 100 tallies for Carson Sitzmann and Boston Nuebel. Cam DeRocher finished with a 106.
