Akron-Westfield tops Gehlen, Hinton in golf triangular

AKRON ó The Akron-Westfield golf teams improved to 9-0 by picking up wins over Gehlen Catholic and Hinton in War Eagle Conference action. The Westerners hosted their conference rivals in a triangular held at the Akron Golf & Country Club on Thursday.


The A-W boys shot a 163 which was lower than Hintonís 176 and Gehlenís 181.

Jackson Marnach was the overall medalist in both duals with a 39 score for the day.

Carter Wilken was a stroke behind with a 40. A pair of 42 scores for Carson James and Raiden Ericson completed their team score. All four of those scores were below the best score for Gehlen, a 44 from Landon Reuter. A-Wís other two scores were 45s from Tatum Wilken and Landyn Vossberg.

Gehlenís Dawson Barthole and Elias Sitzmann also finished with 45s. The final counting score for the Jays was a 47 for Carson Sitzmann.

Gabe Wiltgen and Cam DeRocher rounded out the varsity six for the Jays with matching 48 totals.

Kaden Barrett had the top score for Hinton with a 40 which placed third in the match with the Westerners and was the overall medalist score against the Jays.

Brody Spies and Isaac Richter shot 45 scores for the next two Hinton scores. Beau Cookís 46 was the last score included in the team score. The Blackhawks got a 48 from Garrett Morran and a 58 from Bode Binneboese which were not used for team scoring.

While the Westerners remained perfect in conference play, missing just one match with Trinity Christian, the Gehlen and Hinton squads both ended the day with 5-3 records.


The Akron-Westfield girls shot the low round of 196 to pick up a pair of wins. Gehlen Catholic ended with a 215 which edged out Hintonís 217.

Natalie Nielsen and Taryn Wilken were the top two individuals in both duals. The A-W pair finished with scores of 46 and 48, respectively. The Westerners had the top four scores against Hinton as Josie Smith and Katie Johnson completed the team scoring with identical 51 scores which matched the top score from Hinton. Hailey Rosenbaumís 51 was good enough to place second in the dual against Gehlen, a stroke behind Lynsey Reuter.

Mia Fleckenstein shot a 52 for Hinton and the Blackhawks got a pair of 57 totals from Kenedi Spies and Brooklyn Geddes to complete their team score.

The rest of Gehlenís top four on the day included a 53 from Olivia Bunkers and identical 56 scores from Jayden Barthole and Rysaiah Sitzmann.

Non-counting scores for each team included a 59 and 60 for Akron-Westfieldís Ellie Martinsen and Allie Swoyer, a 58 and 66 for Hintonís Addison Kovarna and Mackenzie Pearce, and a 57 and 58 from Gehlenís Virginia Freking and McKenna Sitzmann.

Akron-Westfield finishes a perfect 9-0 in the conference regular season as they were able to wrap up their entire conference schedule in a two week span after not starting until April 21. Gehlen lost their first match in conference play as they dropped to 6-1. Hinton fell to 4-3 in league matches.
