Le Mars boys tennis claims MRAC tournament title

OMAHA, Neb. ó The Le Mars Community tennis teams played in the Missouri River Activities Conference tournament held Tuesday at the Koch Tennis Center at Tranquility Park.


The Le Mars boys won the conference tournament title and also had the individual singles champion.

Le Mars entered the tournament with the top two seeds in the singles bracket, No. 1 Matt Ahlers and No. 2 Michael Meis. The pair ended up meeting in the championship with Meis ending up getting the win over his teammate by an 8-4 score.

The path to the title began with a win over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson opponent Ryan Smith. Meis then beat Daniel Mora of Sioux City North and Jason Breen of Bishop Heelan.

On the other side of the bracket, Ahlers earned wins over Carter Bertrand of Sioux City North, Ashton Foister of Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Carter Kuehl of Bishop Heelan.

The Le Mars doubles teams each won their opening round matches. Kade Calhoun and Jacob Harms came away with a win over Wyatt Elgert and Brayden Allan from Sioux City North to start their tournament. The pair then lost to No. 4 seeded Bishop Heelanís Luka Ernesti and Jacob Liewer in the next round.

Calhoun and Harms won the rest of their matches after dropping to the consolation bracket. They beat Gavin Belt and Caleb Hunt from Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and then Preston Dobbs and Nick Mickelson from Sioux City East.

The pair then met up with their teammates Evan Pratt and Ian Penne in the fifth place match as Calhoun and Harms came away with the win over their teammates.

Pratt and Penne opened their day with a win over Nathan Lawler and Nick Miller from Bishop Heelan.

The Bulldogs then faced the No. 2 seeded team of Lincoln Colling and Cole Ritchie from Sioux City East and lost that contest.

Pratt and Penne bounced back with a win over James Collins and Derek Runions of CBTJ before winning the consolation semifinal over Collin Schaar and Braxton Van Meter of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Team scores: Le Mars 34, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 22, Sioux City East 20, Bishop Heelan 20, Sioux City North 18, Sergeant Bluff-Luton 8, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 7, Sioux City West 2.


The Le Mars girls finished in fifth place in the team standings with a singles and doubles fifth place finish as well.

Hannah Albrecht was fifth in singles as she ended up going 4-1 on the day.

She opened with a loss to Olivia Delarosa of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in an extremely close match, a tiebreaker the Warrior won by a 9-8 (10-8) score.

Albrecht went on to win the rest of her matches on the day, including avenging the loss to Delarosa.

She picked up an 8-4 win over Bishop Heelanís Anna McCarthy in the first round of consolations, followed with an 8-3 win over Faith Christensen of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, and then avenged the earlier loss with an 8-2 win Delarosa. She then claimed the fifth place match over Ella Boes of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

Claire Blezek and Peyton Wright took fifth in doubles competition. The team ended the day going 4-1.

The No. 2 seed dropped their first round match to Madalyn Welp and Kacie Maynard of Sioux City North by an 8-5 score. The Bulldog duo bounced back to win their remaining matches.

The team blanked Sioux City Westís Carolina Garcia and Areceli Lopez by an 8-0 score.

The Bulldogs then got a tiebreak 9-8 (9-7) win over Madison Wilcoxon and Alivia Wolf of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the next consolation round.

The team added an 8-1 win over Bishop Heelanís Julie Verzal and Anna Erickson to make it to the fifth place match where they beat the other SB-L team of Chloe Goldsmith and Olivia Wegner, doing so by an 8-6 score.

The other Le Mars doubles team went 2-2 and placed seventh. Lexi Hurd and Katie Cunningham made up that doubles pair as they opened with the team their cohorts would end the day with. Goldsmith and Wegner got the initial win and would again beat them in the consolation semifinals. The scores of those matches were 8-5 and 8-1.

The team picked up wins over each of the Council Bluffs schools. They beat Lydia Dix and Sidnie Clark of CBAL by an 8-1 score to begin the consolation portion of the bracket. They then beat Nehrine Lemus and Cara Ronk of CBTJ by an 8-3 score.

The teamís other singles competitor, Kirsten Tyler, lost both of her matches. She fell 8-3 to Faith Tenhulzen of East and 8-5 to Sophie Langin of Sioux City North.
