A-W boys earn golf win at South O’Brien
PRIMGHAR — The Akron-Westfield boys golf team shot their best score in a War Eagle Conference match this season as they took down South O’Brien by a 172-189 tally at the Primghar Golf & Country Club on Friday.
Carter Wilken led the way for the Westerners with a four-over par 40 for the course. He was even on five holes and finished with a +1 on the four remaining holes.
Landon Vossberg was runner-up for the day as he tallied a 42 for the team. He scored evens on three of his holes.
After South O’Brien’s Kaedon Louscher came in next with a 43, the Westerners finished off their team scoring with a pair of 45s from Raiden Ericson and Jackson Marnach. Ericson’s day included a birdie on the par-3 third as he was the only golfer to do that on the day. He added an even score on the par-4 fourth. Marnach had three evens out of the nine holes.
Non-counting scores for the team included a 49 for Michael Swancutt and a 50 for Carson James which were still better than the fourth score from the Wolverines.
The South O’Brien girls came away with a 211-229 win over the Lady Westerners. Both teams had the minimum four golfers needed to tabulate a team score. The Wolverines had the overall medalist with a 49 from Whitney Einck.
A-W’s top score was a 50 from Natalie Nielsen who was even on one hole, the par-3 eighth. Katie Johnson was next for the team with a 54 as she likewise was even on No. 8.
The team’s other two counting scores were in the 60s, a 61 from Aubie Hartman and a 64 from Ellie Martinsen.
The A-W girls drop to 3-4 on the season in conference matches. The boys improve to 5-2 in the league. The Westerners will be in action at Hinton on Monday.
