Representatives from the Luxembourg Heritage Society of Northwest Iowa will share their plans for “Lux Fest” June 5 during a program planned at the Plymouth County Historical Museum in Le Mars at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 25.

Judy Stokesberry of Remsen will headline the program with a PowerPoint, “Where in the World is Luxembourg?” The presentation will share facts about the economy, culture, and attractions in the country of Luxembourg. A sample of the Luxembourg language, national anthem, and some of the festivals will be included.

Stokesberry, a former teacher, also will share stories of what it was like growing up as a Luxembourger in Northwest Iowa.

Also highlighted will be the events of “Lux Fest”, which will mark 150 years since the first Luxembourger settlers arrived in Northwest Iowa circa May 1870. Special guest at “Lux Fest” will be His Excellency Gaston Stronck, Luxembourg ambassador to the United States.

Area self-guided tours of the communities of Alton, Granville, Hospers, Marcus, Remsen, and Le Mars are planned for the day. We at the Plymouth County Historical Museum are looking forward to hosting some of the Luxembourgers to our special exhibits.

Cultural displays in the Spalding Gym at Granville will include family history displays and genealogy books as well as art displays from area schools. Adding to the celebration will be a mural on Alton’s Main Street. A dinner is planned for Saturday evening at Alton Reformed Church. The dinner is limited to tri-state groups from La Crosse, Wisconsin; St. Donatus, Iowa; New Ulm, Minnesota; and other private groups,

An Oktoberfest Choir will perform at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton under the direction of LeAnn Wiederholt. Father Dan Greving and Deacon Rick Roder will offer Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

During “Lux Fest”, the sign at the St. Donatus Site will be dedicated and blessed. The site is located one mile east and two and a quarter mile south of Alton on Kingbird Avenue and 480th Street.
