SIOUX RAPIDS — Hinton’s Derek Anderson will be headed back to Wells Fargo Arena after a pair of wins at the Class 1A district meet on Saturday.

Anderson squared off against Cole Kelly of West Hancock in a top-five showdown in the first place match. The Hinton senior is ranked No. 2 at 1A-220 while Kelly is No. 5 in The Predicament’s rankings. Both wrestlers entered the day with just one loss and it turned out to be a competitive battle until the very end.

“I had a lot of respect for him and even more after that match,” Anderson said. “That’s a match that could have gone either way so I have a lot of respect for him. I’m hoping he does great down at state, too.”

Kelly struck early with a pair of takedowns to an escape for Anderson in the opening period. The early deficit is something the Blackhawk wrestler hasn’t had to deal with much this season.

“It was a good wake-up call,” Anderson said. “A lot of times when I wrestle with guys I’m able to do what I want to do on my feet and they’re on the defensive side. He came out and attacked me and he’s a strong guy. His arm drag is insane so that’s an area I’ll need to work on, something I haven’t had to deal with much so I got to work on that and get that ready for state.”

Anderson pulled to within one with a takedown in the second period and then came away with the tying point on an escape in the third period. After a hard fall to the mat out of bounds led to Anderson having to use some injury time, he returned to the circle and scored a late takedown before earning the win by fall as time expired with an official time of 6:00.

“I’ll be honest with you, nothing was really going through my mind at the end of the match,” Anderson said. “It was just keep wrestling, keep scrambling. At that point instinct kicks in and that’s kind of what happened.”

Anderson’s first match of the day was a quicker win by fall as he pinned Dakota Deuschle of Sioux Central in a time of 1:24. Deuschle did win the third place match over Akron-Westfield’s Carson James by fall in 1:12, but lost to Kelly in the second place wrestle-back bout by fall in 41 seconds.

Anderson will compete in the first round of Class 1A state at Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday morning. He will look for another trip to the podium after finishing third at 1A-195 a year ago. Anderson (43-1) gets the No. 2 seed in the tournament. He will open against Brant Tedrow of Van Buren County (29-7). There is a potential for a second round rematch for Anderson against West Hancock’s Kelly.

Team scores: West Hancock 99, West Sioux 89.5, Woodbury Central 56, Sibley-Ocheyedan 55.5, Western Christian 45, Sioux Central 43.5, Pocahontas Area 42, Kingsley-Pierson 33, Akron-Westfield 30, North Union 21, Eagle Grove 20, Hinton 20, Manson-Northwest Webster 20, West Bend-Mallard 14.
