A-W softball tops West Lyon in 13-inning battle of unbeatens

Thursday, July 2, 2020

LARCHWOOD ó The Akron-Westfield softball team is used to short games where they blow teams out in five innings or less. Tuesday nightís marathon matchup against West Lyon made up for some of those lost innings as the two ranked teams went 13 innings before A-W finally prevailed by a 2-1 score.

The Class 1A No. 8 Lady Westerners struck first for a run in the top of the fifth but West Lyon, the eighth-ranked team in 2A, responded right back with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The run in the fifth was a quick two-out rally for the Westerners as Jaden Harris singled, stole second and came home on a Hailey Wilken single.

West Lyon got their run on a hit from Taylor Rentschler which scored Shay Langenhorst who reached on an error.

Neither team was able to score again until the Westerners got the go-ahead run in the 13th as Natalie Nielsen beat the throw home on an infield hit off the bat of Megan Meinen.

Both teams had other chances throughout the game, but couldnít get anything across as each starting pitcher clamped down with baserunners aboard. Natalie Nielsen went the entire 13 innings and struck out 19 which shattered her career-best mark to date which had been 14 Ks in the teamís game the night before against 3A No. 10 Spirit Lake. Only one player has had more strikeouts in a game this season which is TJ Stoaks of Lenox who fanned 26 in a 15 inning game against East Union. Anna Chapman of Dubuque Wahlert also reached 19 Ks in a game this season, doing so in a regulation 7-inning game against a winless Waterloo West team.

Kennedy Kramer also went 13 innings in the circle as she ended with nine strikeouts for the Wildcats. Both runs she allowed were earned on 11 hits, two hit batters and a walk.

Nine different A-W batters recorded hits, but only Wilken and Nielsen ended with more than one.

The victory moved the Westerners to 11-0 while the Wildcats fell to 7-1.
