Bortscheller ready to travel in retirement
LE MARS — Plans for travel are on the horizon for Le Mars Community Schools teacher Colleen Bortscheller.
Bortscheller said she is looking forward to joining her husband, Fred, who retired last July.
“I am really looking forward to spending winters in a warmer climate,” Bortscheller said.
A current teacher of pre-calculus, calculus, and one section of Algebra 2, Bortscheller first worked with MidAmerican Energy for 10 years before returning to college to get her teaching degree after her children were born.
Since that time, she taught at Gehlen Catholic for eight years, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn for two years, and LCS for 20 years.
Bortscheller holds degrees in accounting and mathematics from Briar Cliff University and a masters of business administration from the University of South Dakota.
“During my 30 years of teaching, I have worked with great teachers and fantastic staffs. They have helped me during challenging times,” she said. “I have also had the privilege of teaching some of the best and brightest students in Le Mars. That has been a joy.”
While Bortscheller says she holds many fond memories, there is one that is nearest and dearest to her heart.
“The one thing that I have most appreciated is when former students return from college to report they were well prepared for their mathematics classes,” Bortscheller said.
She and her husband have been married for 38 years and have two children, Michael of Iowa City, and Jason of Le Mars.
