MMCRU boys end season at G-LR
GEORGE — The MMCRU boys basketball team had their season come to an end Monday in a Class 1A district first round game. The Royals fell to George-Little Rock by a 51-36 final score.
The difference in the game proved to be the second quarter as the Mustangs outscored the Royals 14-2. The other three quarters were all within a possession.
MMCRU shot 34 percent from the field, about 10 percentage points below their opponent.
Kyler Bork led the Royals with 14 points. He had two of the team’s three made shots from 3-point range and was 4-of-5 at the free-throw line.
Gunnar Johnson, Michael Peterson, Lucas Braun and Mitchell Schnepf were next with four points apiece. Peterson led the team with 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs ended with three players in double figures. Drew Denekas led the team with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Charlie Hamilton was next in those categories with 12 points and seven rebounds while adding the team’s lone blocked shot. Isaiah Johnson added 10 points along with five rebounds and five assists.
The game was a rematch of an earlier meeting between the two teams which the Mustangs won 48-37. MMCRU has been eliminated by George-Little Rock for the second straight season after a 50-47 loss in last year’s first round.
The Royals finish the season with a 6-16 record. The team will say goodbye to seniors Johnson, Andrew Barinsky, Derek Goth and Kamden Steffen.
George-Little Rock (11-10) advanced to face Gehlen Catholic (18-5) in the district semifinal round Thursday.
