Akron-Westfield’s Friedrichs, Blowe place at Herb Irgens Invitational

IDA GROVE — Akron-Westfield competed at the Herb Irgens Invitational held Friday and Saturday at OABCIG High School. In the team scoring, out of 25 teams, Akron-Westfield was 16th.

The Westerners had a pair of placing individuals. At 126 pounds, Jadyn Friedrichs placed second. He received a bye in the first round before winning his second round match by fall in 5:15 over Dex Duffett of Tonganoxie (Kan.). In the quarterfinal round, Friedrichs won by a 9-2 score over West Hancock’s Jacob Larson. It was a similar score for Friedrichs in the semifinal round as he won a major decision over Tyce Hanson of Okoboji by a 9-1 score. In the first place match, Friedrichs lost a 5-0 decision to Cael Nelson of Carroll. It was just the third loss of the season for Friedrichs.

Ian Blowe added a third place finish for the Westerners in the 195-pound division. He opened with a quick 15 second win by fall over Gavin Remer of OABCIG. In the next round, he won by injury default over Woodbury Central’s Andrew Martens.

The next two bouts were close one point decisions. In the quarterfinal round, Blowe won a 7-6 decision over Solon’s Braydon Hoffman. In the semifinals, Blowe lost a 3-2 decision to Kale Zuehl of West Hancock. Blowe bounced back for a pair of wins by fall. He pinned Masen Streck of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 22 seconds. In the third place match, Blowe faced Hoffman for the second time. After a decision win in the first meeting, Blowe won by fall in the followup in a time of 3:42.
