Hoag wins weight class title at Bishop Heelan Invitational

SIOUX CITY — Le Mars Community’s Ayden Hoag won his weight class at the Bishop Heelan Invitational on Saturday. The individual title helped the Bulldogs finish fifth out of 15 teams in the final team standings.

Hoag picked up three victories after a bye to bring home the 220-pound title. In his quarterfinal round match, Hoag pinned Braden Peterson of Sioux Falls Lincoln in 1:53. The next round he won by fall in a similar time of 1:42 over Reagan Maassen of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. It was the third pin for Hoag over Maassen this season as the two met in the semifinal round of a third tournament after meeting previously at tournaments in Spencer and Le Mars.

In the first place match, Hoag claimed a 12-3 major decision win over Jackson Bos of Norfolk.

The next-best finish for the Bulldogs came at 145 as Keegan Kayser placed third. Kayser won a pair of decisions to begin. The first was a 3-0 decision over MOC-Floyd Valley’s Orlando Elnei, their second meeting of the week after Kayser won 7-0 in a dual contest on Tuesday.

Kayser followed with a 9-3 decision win over Norfolk’s Josiah Kumm. In the semifinal round, Kayser was pinned by West Sioux’s Mikey Baker in 2:41. Kayser finished off with a third place match win over Norfolk’s Joel Thompson by an 11-6 score.

Conner Peterson placed fourth at 132. After a bye, Peterson quickly pinned Watertown’s RJ Nichols in 28 seconds. Peterson dropped his final two matches, a 12-7 decision to Bishop Heelan’s Jackson Kinnetz and a 9-1 major decision to Grand Island’s Ryker Booth.

Camden Feuerhelm added a fourth place finish at 195. He pinned Heelan’s Cole Sprague in 2:29 and Watertown’s Ethan Wientjes in 1:13. Feuerhelm lost his other two matches, the first a semifinal loss by fall in 2:59 to Harlan’s Zane Bendorf and then a 17-8 major decision to Grand Island’s Justyce Hostetler.

Evan Jalas went 4-1 on the day and finished fifth at 182. He started with a 4:40 win by fall over Storm Lake’s Cole McAtee. In the quarterfinals, Jalas was outscored 16-1 for a technical fall loss to Hudson Oliver of Grand Island. The Le Mars wrestler won his remaining matches of the tournament. In the consolation second round, Jalas won a 9-1 major decision over Lane Mead of Norfolk. In the consolation semifinals, Jalas won a 9-7 decision over Kishmar Eberline of Sioux Falls Lincoln. He finished off with a 6-2 win over Heelan’s James Cleary in the fifth place match.

Other placing individuals for the Bulldogs were Matthew Vondrak (6th-152), Alex Allen (6th-160), Arik Burnett (6th-170), Michael Murra (7th-138) and Brock Hessenius (8th-113).
