Akron-Westfield splits with South O’Brien
PAULLINA — Akron-Westfield visited South O’Brien on Friday for a War Eagle Conference basketball doubleheader.
The A-W girls won by a 52-25 score to sweep the regular season series. The Westerners won the other meeting in early January by a 41-27 score.
Makenzie Hughes finished with 27 points for the second consecutive outing. She also led the Westerners with eight steals and had the team’s lone blocked shot. She tied for the team lead with nine rebounds with Addison Naslund and added three assists.
Naslund and Alyssa Nemesio had nine points apiece, one behind the leading scorer for the Wolverines, Taja Conley.
The Westerners improved to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in the conference. South O’Brien fell to 0-14 overall with six of those losses in conference games.
Boys fall short
The A-W boys fell by a 59-44 score to the Wolverines.
South O’Brien had a balanced scoring attack with five players in double figures as they shot 50 percent from the field.
David Bottjen led the Wolverines with 12 points. He was followed by Boston Riedemann with 11 points while Hudson Oolman, Ben Woodall and Willie Conley added 10 points apiece.
The Westerners shot 36.5 percent from the field, but went 0-of-14 from 3-point range.
The team had three players finish in double figures. Laytin Koch and Jackson Marnach led the team with 14 points apiece. Marnach had nine rebounds which was most on the team. He tied with Koch for most steals as they each had two.
Tatum Wilken added 10 points.
The Wolverines improved to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference. The Westerners slipped to 3-11 overall and 2-5 in the league.
