Hinton wrestling brings home team title from Le Mars Invite

LE MARS — No individual champions, no problem for the Hinton wrestling team on Saturday as they still tallied enough points to win the Le Mars Invite team title over 16 other teams.

The Blackhawks did not have any individual champions, but had five wrestlers take the runner-up spot in their respective weight class to finish atop the team standings.

At 106 pounds, Evan Stahl was the runner-up. He opened with a bye and then pinned his next two opponents. He finished off Akron-Westfield’s Jacob Pierce in 1:04 and claimed a 4:40 win by fall over Josiah Kauffman of Sioux Falls Lincoln. Stahl lost his first place match by fall in 1:03 to Josh Hoffman of Sheldon/South O’Brien.

Ethan Sachau was second at 126. After a bye, he pinned Brandon Hughes of Spirit Lake Park in 2:47. In the semifinals, he edged out a close 9-8 decision over Akron-Westfield’s Jadyn Friedrichs. Sachau lost his first place match by a 6-4 decision to Bentley Williams of Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Mark Gant took silver at 132. He pinned each of his first three opponents, taking down Sioux City East’s Luke Brockelsby in 1:07, Cherokee’s Carter Hautt in 3:51 and Conner Peterson of Le Mars in 2:37. He lost his final match by fall in 1:31 to Sioux Center’s Kade Bauer.

Gage Morgan took second at 138. After a bye, he pinned West Sioux’s Dustin Van Oort in 1:19. He followed with a 7-4 decision win over Dawson Wallen of Sioux Falls Lincoln. In the first place match, he fell to Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Dawson Beyer in a time of 4:53.

Gabe Anderson added the other runner-up finish at 170. He began with a bye and then pinned Sioux Center’s Solomon Tea in 2:23 and Isaac Van Beek of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley in 6:00. In the title bout, Anderson lost by a 9-3 score to Rylan DeGroot of Western Christian.

Other placings

Nicholas Lindley was third at 120. He pinned his first two opponents, Dominic Rounds of Sheldon/South O’Brien and Juan Ruvalcaba of BH/RV, before dropping a 5-0 match to Turner Gordon of Sioux Falls Lincoln in the semifinals. Lindley claimed the third place match by fall in 1:11 over Reid Persinger.

Jackson Kounkel took bronze at 160. He pinned his first two opponents, Jason Vande Vegte of Western Christian and Casey Tath of Bellevue, before getting pinned by Zach Strubbe of BH/RV in the semifinals. In the third place match, he won a tiebreaker by a 4-2 score over Cherokee’s Logan Allender.

Tommy Tanner (4th-145), Garrett Divis (5th-285), Isaac Richter (6th-152), Jacob Bishop (6th-182), Brooks Binneboese (6th-195) and Reese Stokes (7th-220) were the team’s other wrestlers.
