MMCRU girls beat H-M-S in War Eagle action

MARCUS — The MMCRU girls basketball team rattled off their sixth win in a row with a 55-45 victory over a winless Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn team in War Eagle Conference action Friday.

Holding a slim three point advantage at halftime, the Royals extended their lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Hawks 13-4 as they ended up winning by double digits.

Senior Kora Alesch had a career scoring night with 34 points. She was 13-of-23 from the field with just one of those field goal makes coming from 3-point range. She added a perfect 7-of-7 performance at the charity stripe. Alesch tied for the team lead with three assists, three steals and a block, and finished with five rebounds.

Avery Schlenger reached double digits with 10 points which included a pair of 3-pointers.

She added four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a blocked shot.

Kennedy Tentinger added five points, Kaleigha Dreckman scored four and Jadyn Young chipped in the other two points. Young was second on the team with six rebounds, two less than team leader Isabelle Olson.

Abby Douma had the most points for the Hawks as she went 9-of-11 from the field and finished with 19 points. The rest of the team combined to go 9-of-39 from the field.

Moriah Otto scored six points while Elise Haack and Kylee Schiphoff added five apiece. Emily Mutombo pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while scoring four points.

The Royals have won the last 11 meetings in the series. The 10 point margin of victory was the closest in the series since the first of the 11 wins, a one point victory for MMCRU.

The Royals improved to 7-2 and 4-1 in the conference. The Hawks fell to 0-10 overall with half of those losses coming in conference games.
