Second half rally falls short for Le Mars girls basketball

SIOUX CITY ó Trailing by a 32-13 score at halftime, the Le Mars Community girls basketball team rallied in the second half against Sioux City East, but came up short by a 61-56 margin in a Missouri River Activities Conference game Thursday.

The Bulldogs exploded for 28 points in the third quarter to pull to within a possession and make a game of it down the stretch, but the Class 5A No. 11 ranked Black Raiders did just enough to avoid the upset.

Sarah Brown made four 3-pointers as she ended as the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Metta Skov finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds for the team. Half of her points came at the charity stripe.

Zoe Wittkop, who led the team with four assists, added eight points for the team. Madi Huls and Jaelyn Marienau each scored seven points while Lexi Hurd rounded out the scoring with two points while adding eight rebounds.

A pair of freshmen led the Black Raiders in scoring. Trishelle Miller led the way with 28 points which included three triples. Hudsyn Ranschau knocked down five 3-pointers en route to finishing with 17 points.

Junior Alexandra Flattery had the teamís other two 3-pointers as she finished with 10 points and also led the team with eight rebounds.

East is one of the top 3-point shooting teams in the state with 110 made in their 10 games this season, trailing only North Linnís 113. On a per-game basis those two teams switch places with East making 11 per game and North Linn second with 9.4 per contest.

Le Mars averages 7.4 made 3-pointers per game, just outside of the top 10 in the state.

The two teams will meet again in Le Mars in February as the Bulldogs will try to even the season series. Neither side has swept the other in the years since Le Mars joined the MRAC.

East improved to 9-1 with the win and is 7-0 in the conference. Le Mars fell to 7-5 with the loss and is 5-2 in conference games through the first half of the conference schedule.
