LE MARS — Kingsley-Pierson freshman Sydney Doeschot made quite the debut in Monday’s non-conference win over Gehlen Catholic. In the season-opening 68-47 win, Doeschot finished with 37 points.

She was 16-of-25 from the field, a 64 percent shooting percentage, and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. She led the team with four steals and tied for the team lead in rebounds (6) and assists (3).

Fellow freshman Emma Dye was second on the team with nine points.

Senior Makenna Bowman and freshman Addi Foster added seven points apiece for the Panthers.

Gehlen Catholic was led by senior Miyah Whitehead who scored 21 points.

Kingsley-Pierson jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored their opponent in all four quarters in the win.

The meeting was the third in the last four years between the two squads. Gehlen won the prior two, taking a 73-63 game to advance to state at the end of the 2019-20 season and coming from behind to win 62-58 at the start of last season, the first game played in Kingsley-Pierson’s new gymnasium.

The Panthers start the season 1-0 while the Jays open with an 0-1 record.
