LE MARS — The Friends of the Le Mars Public Library will open their bookstore on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 2-6 p.m., and Friday, Nov. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The bookstore is located at 520 Fourth St. S.W., just south of Kwik Star.

Most items are priced at $1 or $2. A wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books for adults and kids are available. In addition, the bookstore will be offering “buy 1 get 1 free” for all kid’s books and for all health and fitness books, according to Friends member Mary Albrecht.

The proceeds from the used book sale are used to fund library programming. Most recently, the Friends of the Library provided funding for the annual Books for Treats event, held Saturday, Oct 29, during the downtown Halloween trick or treating event.  During this event 1,020 people came through the library and 551 books were given to children from birth to grade 5. The support of the Friends of the Library makes this event possible. Having access to books helps set children up for reading success.

According to a study sponsored by the US Department of Education, children who are read to at least three times a week by a family member are almost twice as likely to score in the top 25 percent in reading compared to children who are read to less than 3 times a week. Shopping at the Friends Book Store helps put books in the hand of children, Albrecht noted.
