JOHNSTON — Mike Meyer is one of three individuals who have been selected into the Volleyball Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) for 2022. The induction ceremony will be in conjunction with the 2022 Senior All Star weekend at Johnston High School on Nov. 12.

“I was not expecting this honor, so it was really exciting news for me to receive. It is a pinnacle award for coaches, and I have never had a higher personal honor in my coaching career,” said Meyer.

Meyer was the head coach at Gehlen Catholic from 2006-2021 and at Remsen St. Mary’s from 1979-1987.

His overall high school record is 560-191. Meyer led 13 teams to the state tournament and earned state runner-up finishes two times. He also had four semifinal appearances.

He was named Class 1A District Coach of the year six times.

Meyer served on the IGHSAU Advisory Board from 2014-2017. Meyer is also currently a member of the IGCA and American Volleyball Coaches Association. Meyer was selected as the 2020-2021 Iowa Girls Volleyball Coach of the Year.

“I am grateful to all the assistant coaches I have had over the years, plus the great players. They are all part of this honor as well because without them, it wouldn’t be possible,” said Meyer.

When asking Meyer how he would encourage a young coach, he said, “I would tell them to not just learn the sport but learn the craft of coaching. I really studied coaching over the years and even taught classes on it. Don’t choose coaching unless you really enjoy working with kids.”

He also coached college between his two high school assignments at Westmar College in Le Mars and Northwestern College in Orange City.

During his tenure at Northwestern College, Meyer led the Red Raiders to five NAIA National Tournament appearances. Meyer’s college record was 452-151.

Meyer was also the assistant baseball coach at Remsen St. Mary’s which won six state baseball championships.

Meyer is retired from coaching, but is still employed at Gehlen Catholic School as a junior high and high school social studies teacher.

Joining Meyer in the 2022 Hall of Fame class are Craig Pitcher, former head coach at Iowa City High School and Northern University High School, along with official Chris Armstrong of Kalona.
