A-W football ends season on high note

AKRON ó The Akron-Westfield football team didnít make the playoffs, but they finished with a Week 9 win over Riverside by a 34-0 score to conclude their season Friday.

Conner Wendel completed 22-of-27 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns in the win. His top target was Lane Kenny with 10 catches for 90 yards. The touchdown throws went to Jackson Marnach, Ian Blowe and Hayden Wahlberg. Marnach finished with five catches for 52 yards. Wahlberg added three receptions for 55 yards. Blowe had a pair of catches for 15 yards.

Blowe was the teamís leading rusher and got into the end zone on a rushing play. He finished with 87 yards on 11 carries. Jack Terpstra added the other scoring rush on his only carry on a 1-yard rush.

The Westerners recovered two fumbles on defense as Blowe and Michael Brown each had a recovery. Kyle Hebert led the team with eight tackles, 4.5 of which went for loss, as the Westerners held Riverside to 106 yards of offense. Most of the offense came from Jaxon Gordon as he carried the ball 20 times for 62 yards. Ayden Salais had a 20-yard gain on his only carry.

The Bulldogs didnít do much through the air. Quarterback Landyn Schoenrock completed 5-of-9 passes for just 16 yards. Salais had four catches for nine yards and Garrett Hough added the other for seven yards.

It was the first shutout win for the Westerners since holding Gehlen Catholic scoreless in a 34-0 game on Sept. 28, 2018.

Both teams finish the season with a 2-7 record. Six seniors played their final game for the Westerners.
