No. 1 RSM runs roughshod over Audubon in playoff opener

REMSEN ó Top-ranked Remsen St. Maryís dominated Audubon in an 8-player first round playoff game on Friday. The Hawks won by a final score of 76-0, the teamís largest ever margin of victory in the postseason.

The Hawks scored touchdowns on their first two plays from scrimmage in the game. After forcing an Audubon punt on their first drive, the Hawks scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cael Ortmann to Ryan Willman on their first offensive play.

RSM forced a turnover on downs on Audubonís next series and got the ball on the plus side of the field once again. On the first play of the drive, Brenden Fisch ran for a 23-yard touchdown.

Ortmann ran for a 33-yard touchdown on the teamís next possession and added a 7-yard rushing score to put the Hawks up 28-0 before the end of the first quarter.

RSM had another one play drive in the second quarter. This time pinned at their own 9-yard line after a punt, Ortmann connected with Willman for a 71-yard touchdown. Willman finished with the two touchdown grabs for 101 yards in the game.

A double reverse pass attempt was picked off by Jaxon Bunkers to give the Hawks the ball back at Audubonís 15-yard line. On the first play of that possession, Ortmann threw to Bunkers for the touchdown which put the running clock into motion at 42-0.

Alex Schroeder caught the teamís other touchdown pass on a 52-yard play with 3:57 left before halftime. Schroeder led the team in catches with four as he ended with 76 receiving yards. Ortmann completed his day passing with four touchdown throws on 7-of-8 passing for 192 yards.

A hard kick from Bunkers on the kickoff bounced off one of the Audubon players and was recovered by the kicker to set up the teamís final first half touchdown. Ortmann added his third rushing touchdown on a 37-yard play, part of his team-leading six carries for 105 yards in the game.

Bunkers added a rushing touchdown in the second half on an 11-yard carry. Landon Waldschmitt added the other two touchdowns as he finished second on the team in rushing with 74 yards on four carries.

The RSM defense held the Wheelers scoreless for the second time this season with the other coming in a 44-0 loss to Fremont-Mills.

The Wheelers gained just 60 yards on 32 carries. Quarterback Aaron Olsen led the team with 29 yards on 17 carries. Olsen completed 4-of-9 passes for 22 yards.

RSMís defense got five tackles apiece from Bunkers and Braxton Kneip to lead the team. Keaton Harpenau and Brady Wurth added 4.5 tackles apiece.

Audubon finishes the season with a 4-6 record as all of their losses came to playoff qualifying teams. RSM is now 3-1 against Audubon in the postseason. Along with their win Friday, they also beat the Wheelers 42-27 in the 2020 quarterfinals and won 64-32 in the 2017 quarterfinals. Audubonís win came in the 2019 semifinals by a 39-28 score.

Remsen St. Maryís (9-0) will host West Bend-Mallard (7-2) in the Round of 16 on Friday.

The two teams have met in the postseason once before. In 2009, West Bend-Mallard won 44-36 in the first round. West Bend-Mallard is in the playoffs for the first time since 2015. They won their first round game 48-0 over Clarksville.
