MMCRUís Galles, Hintonís Sypersma advance to state cross country
HOLSTEIN ó Two individuals will be representing the area at the state cross country meet in Class 1A. Kaden Galles of MMCRU and Zach Sypersma of Hinton earned qualifying spots at the state qualifying meet held Thursday at Holstein.
In Class 1A, the top 10 individuals and top two teams from state qualifying meets advance to state.
Galles completed the course in a time of 17:27.47 for fourth place in the state qualifying run. The junior is the No. 27 ranked runner in Class 1A by the IATC and will be making a repeat trip to Fort Dodge for the state meet.
Ogdenís Carson Van Sickle, ranked No. 18, had the winning time in the field of 92 competitors. He won the race in a time of 17:04.01. Sibley-Ocheyedan had the second and third place times of 17:08.54 and 17:09.34 from Alejandro Bernal and Ben Byers.
Sypersma was ninth in a time of 17:47.28. The senior was the third of three runners who all finished within two-tenths of a second of each other in the 17:47 timeframe.
Hintonís Caleb Bower just missed out on advancing to state. The freshman finished 11th in a time of 17:56.59. The final time within the top 10 was 17:49.23 from Sioux Centralís Jack Christian.
MMCRU and Hinton each had the minimum five runners to tabulate a team score as they placed fifth and sixth out of the 14 complete teams. MMCRU had two others in the top 20. Sophomore Lucas Braun was 16th with a time of 18:38.35 and senior Owen Alesch finished about a second later with a time of 18:39.37 for 18th. The final two runners for the Royals were freshman Wyatt Alesch (30th, 19:11.88) and sophomore Max Pepper (83rd, 24:05.52).
Hintonís third runner was sophomore Cooper Nelson who finished 47th with a time of 20:05.09. Completing the roster for the Blackhawks were sophomores Ian Greigg (60th, 21:17.39) and Carson Sudbeck (69th, 22:04.23).
Akron-Westfield placed 10th in the team standings. Their best finish came from Cael Morrow. The junior had the first time past the 19-minute mark as he was 25th in 19:01.85. Sophomore teammates Noah Boie and Dexter Briggs had times a little over a minute later. Boie was 48th in 20:09.27 and Briggs was 50th in 20:11.77. Fellow sophomores Tanner Frerichs (66th, 21:57.91) and Dawson Trobaugh (75th, 22:44.71) completed the counting five for the Westerners. Freshman Jeremiah Bruget (87th, 26:04.04) and sophomore Mathew Byerschmidt (92nd, 29:46.54) were the teamís final two runners.
Gehlen Catholic was 12th in the final team standings. The Jays were led by a 35th place time of 19:27.16 from sophomore Braden Weber. Robert Schmit and Nolan Teel took the 55th and 57th place spots. Sophomore Schmit was 55th in 20:54.82 and freshman Teel was two spots behind with a time of 21:06.52.
The Gehlen roster was completed by freshmen Owen Sievers (67th, 21:58.99) and Landen Kneip (71st, 22:11.34).
Ogden, the No. 6 ranked team in 1A, and Sioux Central, the No. 19 ranked team in the class, took the top two team spots to advance to state.
Galles, Sypersma and the rest of the Class 1A boys state meet field will run at 11:15 a.m., Friday, Oct. 28, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

No local individuals finished within the top 10 to advance to state. The best finish by a local runner came from Hintonís Ava Lang. The sophomore finished the race in 22:30.85. Junior teammate Kaci Allen was six places behind her with a time of 22:55.35. Junior Kyra Peters took 36th in a time of 23:48.00 as she was the last runner to finish in under 24 minutes.
Three sophomores completed Hintonís team in the race. Haylee Jarvis was 58-hundredths past the 26-minute mark for 55th. Ruby Harper was 60th in 26:36.02 and Morgan Vogt rounded out the roster with a time of 29:00.35 for 70th.
Hinton was the only local school to have enough runners for a team score. They were eighth of 11 complete teams.
MMCRU sophomore Audrey Etter just beat the 23-minute mark with a time of 22:59.94 as she was 28th. Junior teammates Alyson Ball (71st, 29:09.51) and Natalie Plagman (74th, 30:16.33) were the teamís other runners.
Gehlen had two runners at the meet. Senior Addison Arens was 38th in a time of 24:05.00 and sophomore Paisley Tesch was 64th in 27:11.97.
Akron-Westfield also had two individuals. Senior Jolie Sabaliauskas was 54th in 26:00.48 and junior Josalyn Bruget was 62nd in 26:57.51.
McKenna Loutsch was the lone runner for Remsen St. Maryís. The junior finished 46th in a time of 25:03.85.
Alta-Aureliaís Nora Peterson, the No. 4 ranked runner in the class, had the winning time in the field of 79 runners as she finished in 18:54.01. The No. 7 ranked Warriors advanced as a team in second place behind No. 5 ranked Sibley-Ocheyedan, who had the next two best individual times in the race from No. 2 ranked Madison Brouwer (19:01.32) and No. 11 ranked Madison Marco (29:46.04).
