No. 7 Gehlen Catholic sweeps West Sioux

HAWARDEN — Class 1A No. 7 ranked Gehlen Catholic brought their brooms with them on Tuesday to their War Eagle Conference match at West Sioux. The Lady Jays picked up a 3-0 sweep by set scores of 25-7, 25-9 and 25-13.

“I was really proud of how our team played overall tonight,” Gehlen Head Coach Dan Goebel said. “We kept the pressure on them all night with tough serving and accurate passes, which resulted in a good number of kills spread across several hitters.”

Gehlen hit .264 as a team for the match. They were led by a .370 efficiency for their top hitter Miyah Whitehead as she finished with 12 kills.

Aurora Goebel was next on the team with eight kills. Rysaiah Sitzmann and Cadence Goebel added five kills apiece. All three of those players hit for a .333 efficiency for the match.

Cadence Goebel had 22 assists for the team in the win. She also had a solo block, joining Jayden Barthole as the team leaders in that category.

Gehlen served up 10 aces with six different players getting at least one. Cadence Goebel led the team with three aces. Ellen Hunt and Jasmine Lubben ended with two apiece.

The Gehlen defense yielded just four kills to the Falcons throughout the match.

“Our back row covered the corners well and our defense overall maintained a high level of intensity throughout the night,” Coach Goebel said.

Larissa Pohlen and Cadence Goebel led the team with seven digs each. Sophie Ruden was next with six while Lubben finished with five.

Gehlen improved to 11-5 with the win and 4-1 in conference action. West Sioux fell to 2-14 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

Gehlen will compete at a tournament hosted by Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Saturday.
