Akron-Westfield falls to No. 3 Woodbury Central
AKRON — Tied 7-7 after a quarter, the Class A No. 3 ranked Woodbury Central football team scored 34 unanswered points against Akron-Westfield in a 41-7 non-district win on Friday.
Conner Wendel connected with Jack Terpstra for the only score of the game for the Westerners. It was the most successful combination in the passing game as Terpstra caught seven passes for 109 yards in the game. Wendel was 17-of-29 passing for 176 yards.
The Westerners were held to less than a yard per carry in the running game. Ian Blowe led the team with 21 yards on nine carries.
Drew Kluender threw a pair of touchdown passes and rushed for two more for the Wildcats. The junior was 17-of-28 for 234 yards. He ended with negative net rushing yards but did run for a pair of scores.
Kluender connected with Kyan Schultzen for one touchdown and Will DeStigter for another as they were the top two receivers. Schultzen caught seven passes for 96 yards while DeStigter had five receptions for 89 yards.
The team added scoring rushes from Max McGill and Ryder Koele. McGill led the Wildcats in rushing with 61 yards on 12 carries. Koele rushed 11 times for 38 yards.
Defensively, Blowe led the Westerners with 11.5 tackles including two for loss. Lane Kenny had a sack as part of his eight total tackles.
Woodbury Central improved to 4-0 with the win as they have scored at least 40 points in all four of their wins. The Wildcats have won the last two meetings, winning last year’s game by an identical score.
The Westerners dropped to 1-3 with the loss. The team will travel to play Gehlen Catholic in their next game.
