MMCRU falls in high-scoring game to No. 10 H-M-S
HARTLEY — MMCRU scored five touchdowns but it still wasn’t nearly enough as they fell to Class A No. 10 ranked Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn by a score of 66-34 in a district contest Friday.
The Royals had touchdown passes from three different players in the game. Jonah Petersen completed 7-of-12 passes for 153 yards and a score. He also caught a 5-yard touchdown on a pass from Michael Peterson, his only attempt of the game. Michael Schmillen added the other passing score as he was 2-of-3 for 34 yards. The other touchdown receptions were a 26-yard score for Gage Johnson and a 29-yard score for Jace Colling. Kyler Bork was the team’s leading receiver with three catches for 101 yards.
The Royals added a 4-yard rushing score from Mason Roberts on his only carry of the game. John Schmillen was the team’s leading rusher with 39 yards on seven carries.
The team’s other scoring play was an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for Jace Colling.
The Hawks rushed for over 400 yards and had eight rushing scores in the game. Travis Kamradt led the team with 178 yards on 12 carries with four scoring rushes. Quarterback Kooper Ebel ran the ball 11 times for 175 yards and three scores. Aiden Espeland rushed four times for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Ebel was also successful passing the ball. He completed 10-of-13 passes for 179 yards with a lone touchdown pass being a 34-yard connection with Kamradt. Ryan Borden was the leading receiver with four catches for 77 yards.
The Hawks added a special teams touchdown with an 80-yard kick return for a score by Ethan Diehm.
MMCRU dropped to 0-8 all time against the Hawks. The Royals have given up at least 60 points in each of the last six meetings in the series.
H-M-S improved to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the district. They will go on the road to play Alta-Aurelia in district action Friday.
MMCRU fell to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in district games. The Royals will host South O’Brien in their homecoming game Friday.
