Le Mars football suffers first loss of season at East
LE MARS ó In a matchup of unbeaten teams, Class 4A No. 10 ranked Le Mars ended up falling short of Sioux City East, a team receiving votes in Class 5A, by a final score of 52-17 in a Thursday night game at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
Le Mars held an early lead as Teagen Kasel connected with Sione Fifita for a 56-yard touchdown just over two minutes into the contest.
East answered with two touchdowns later in the first quarter to obtain a lead they would not relinquish.
Jovany Kabongo drilled a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter to pull the score to 14-10, but the Black Raiders scored 10 points before halftime, starting with a 25-yard field goal of their own from Jacob Borrall. The teamís final touchdown drive of the half saw East work from their their own 1-yard line and score about two minutes later to cap off the 99-yard drive.
The other Le Mars score of the game was another touchdown pass to Fifita as he scored on a 15-yard screen play which came in the third quarter.
The East offense exploded for 445 yards through the air as Cole Ritchie completed 35-of-48 passes for a pair of touchdowns with one interception which was grabbed by Fifita. Hauling in over half of the completions was Kelynn Jacobsen who had 18 catches for 263 yards with a touchdown of 55 yards included in his stats. The other touchdown throw went for 33 yards to Destiny Adams.
East added 128 yards on the ground with four touchdowns, two apiece for Brecken Schossow and Brady Wavrunek.
East improved to 3-0 with the win as they will play Sergeant Bluff-Luton in their next contest. They won last yearís meeting by a 42-13 score.
Le Mars dropped to 2-1 with the loss. The Bulldogs will try to bounce back in their final non-district contest of the season on Friday when they host MOC-Floyd Valley, who was ranked No. 8 in Class 3A after the first two weeks of the season.
