PAULLINA — Class 1A No. 5 ranked Gehlen Catholic came away with a sweep of South O’Brien in War Eagle Conference play Thursday. The Jays won by set scores of 25-7, 25-19 and 25-13.

“With pretty good passing, we were able to move the ball around to different hitters and mix up our attack,” Gehlen Head Coach Dan Goebel said. “Miyah was our leader in hitting tonight with 15 kills, but a number of other players put a good number of hits in the court.”

Whitehead hit for a .478 efficiency in the win.

Setter Cadence Goebel had 23 assists while finishing next on the team with five kills. Goebel and Whitehead led the team in digs with six apiece and were joined by Lynsey Reuter for the team-lead in blocking with one each.

The Jays served up 18 aces in the match, led by five from Whitehead. Sophie Ruden and Rysaiah Sitzmann added four apiece. Aurora Goebel had three aces and Jayden Barthole had the other two.

“Between our strong serving and their serving errors, we gained a lot of points throughout the night,” Goebel said.

South O’Brien was held to a negative kill efficiency as they had just eight kills in the match. Half of those came from Marissa Ebel.

Goebel said there were still areas to improve on.

“Unfortunately, we were a little flat footed at times and did not respond to some plays like we should have, allowing more points than necessary,” Goebel said.

Gehlen improved to 2-1 in the conference and 4-2 overall. South O’Brien remains winless in both categories on the season.
