No. 11 Hinton beats MMCRU in three sets
MARCUS — The Class 2A No. 11 ranked Hinton volleyball team won a 3-0 match over MMCRU in War Eagle Conference play Thursday. The Blackhawks won by set scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-10.
“MMCRU played aggressive defense tonight, which was good for us,” Hinton co-Head Coach Kate Ortegren said. “They were able to get touches on our attacks, which would usually result in a free ball back to us. At first, we didn’t expect some of our attacks to be returned, but we were able to adjust and better our passes as the night went on.”
Bailey Boeve led the Blackhawks with 11 kills in the match as she hit for a .769 kill efficiency. She also had a strong presence on defense with six block assists and one solo block and seven digs. The freshman also led the team with five ace serves.
“Bailey Boeve had a great night,” Ortegren said.
Gabbie Friessen added seven kills and Carly Hicklin knocked down six as next on the team.
Ashlyn Kovarna finished with 28 assists from the setter position. She also led the team with eight digs and had a solo block and five block assists.
Friessen and Aubree Lake had three aces apiece on a night in which the team had a total of 12 ace serves.
MMCRU was held to just seven kills in the match as they hit for a negative percentage. Avery Schlenger was the only player with more than one kill as she finished with four.
Hannah Neddermeyer led the way with two blocks while Torey Tentinger had one. Breanna Staab had their only ace serve as she tied for the team lead in digs with Schlenger with five.
