Akron-Westfield takes down MMCRU in four sets

MARCUS ó War Eagle Conference foes Akron-Westfield and MMCRU met Tuesday in volleyball action. The two schools have been competitive in many of their matches over the years and this one was also a hard-fought battle with the Westerners coming out on top by a 3-1 final.

Of the nine matches against each other since the start of the 2017 season, the losing team has managed to win one set in all but one of those matches.

The Westerners secured a 25-16 win in the first set, but the remaining three were much closer. MMCRU evened the match in a marathon second set which ended with a score of 32-30. The Westerners took the lead back with a 25-21 win in the third and then finished off the match with a 26-24 extended set win in the fourth.

The Westerners fed the ball to Lauryn Saathoff as she knocked down 25 of the teamís 44 kills. She hit for a .236 efficiency which was second highest on the team.

Makenzie Hughes added six kills with a .143 efficiency and Natalie Olson finished with five kills with a team-best .400 efficiency. Addi Naslund and Allie Swoyer finished with four kills apiece.

Josie Jacobs assisted on most of the kills, ending with 39 assists.

Defensively, Hughes led the team with 22 digs which was two more than Swoyer. Lainey Schuknecht and Alyssa Nemesio were also in double digits with 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Naslund and Olson led the team with three blocks apiece.

Five of the teamís six servers recorded an ace. Schuknecht led the team with three ace serves.

MMCRU had two players reach double digits in kills. Kora Alesch led the team with 13 kills. Avery Schlenger added 10 kills. Isabelle Olson ended one short of double digits in kills as she also led the team with 26 assists.

Alesch led the team with 26 digs. Four others were in double digits in digs as Schlenger was next with 18. Olson had 15, Breanna Staab added 13 and Mykin Youde finished with 12.

The Royals served up 11 aces from six different players. Staab led the team with three ace serves. Schlenger, Alesch and Olson all finished with two apiece.

The Westerners have won the last three meetings in the series.

Akron-Westfield improved to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference. MMCRU fell to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
