No. 12 A-W softball beats Westwood
AKRON — The Class 1A No. 12 ranked Akron-Westfield softball team won their regional quarterfinal game over Westwood by a final score of 11-1 in five innings on Wednesday.
The Westerners received a bye into the quarterfinal round while Westwood opened the tournament with a 13-1 win over Whiting.
The Rebels struck first for a run in the opening frame, but Akron-Westfield took control after that. They scored two runs in the second to take the lead and added five in the fourth and four in the fifth to come away with a run-rule margin of victory.
Megan Meinen led the team with a 3 RBI game. She hit a single, got a pair of sacrifices and drew a walk in the contest.
Josie Jacobs ended with a 2 RBI game with a single and sacrifice.
Alyssa Nemesio, Chloee Colt, Taryn Wilken and Allie Swoyer drove in a run apiece for the Westerners. Ciara Barron and Natalie Olson led the team with two hits apiece.
Emma Rolfes pitched all five innings of the win. She gave up an unearned run while scattering three hits and a walk. She ended with five strikeouts.
Westwood finished the season with a 6-15 record. Akron-Westfield improved to 23-5 as they advanced to the regional semifinal round.
