Hinton baseball edges Central Lyon
HINTON — The Hinton baseball team edged past Central Lyon by a 3-1 score in Wednesday’s Class 2A district semifinal contest. Hinton scored a run in the second and another in the third. Central Lyon scored their lone run in the fourth and the Blackhawks added an insurance run in the sixth.
Owen Eli, Gavin Nelson and Brody Spies drove in the runs for Hinton in the game. Nelson had one of the team’s three hits, a double, while also dropping down a sacrifice. Eli and Spies drove in their runs on sacrifice flies.
Hinton was held to just three hits by Central Lyon pitcher Zach Luther. Along with a double from Nelson, Ty Ridgway added a double and Easton Stusse hit a single. Lutmer ended up with a loss in a complete game effort with three hits and two walks allowed while striking out two.
Nelson ended up outdueling Lutmer in the game. He went the full seven innings, giving up an unearned run while striking out 14 Central Lyon batters. Nelson now has 108 strikeouts on the season which is the second most among pitchers in all classes. Only Clear Lake’s Jett Neuberger has fanned more this season with 121 in the same number of innings as Nelson, 57 2/3. Nelson improved to 8-2 on the season with the win.
Central Lyon ends their season with a 15-9 record. They had won their first round game by a 6-5 score over Unity Christian to advance to play the Blackhawks who received an opening round bye.
Hinton improves to 18-7 with the win. They advance to face West Sioux (12-9) in a district final contest at home on Saturday. The Blackhawks lost both meetings to their War Eagle Conference foes this season. They fell by a 4-0 score at home on May 27 and lost in walk-off fashion on June 22 in Hawarden by a 6-5 score as the Falcons scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.
