Le Mars softball upsets No. 9 Sergeant Bluff-Luton
SERGEANT BLUFF — The Le Mars softball team upset Class 3A No. 9 ranked Sergeant Bluff-Luton by a 3-2 score on Monday.
The game was a makeup of a Missouri River Activities Conference doubleheader which saw the second game rained out earlier this season.
Le Mars never trailed in the game, taking a 2-0 lead with one run in each of the first two innings before the Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the second. Le Mars pushed across what would be the winning run in the top of the fifth.
Payton Wright reached on a walk and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Maggie Allen in the first inning. A triple for Avery Pratt in the second provided the second run after Mackenzie Kunkel knocked her home with a double.
A 2 RBI base hit from Bailey Moreau tied the game in the bottom of the second.
The Bulldogs pushed across the final run in the fifth as Charlie Grosenheider led off the inning by reaching on an error and courtesy runner Natalie Vanderloo scored two batters later on a ground out from Averie Morgan.
Lizzie Koonce kept the Warriors scoreless the rest of the way as she picked up the win. She went seven innings with six strikeouts.
Regan Herbst allowed two runs and Brooklyn Ocker gave up one run as the two pitchers for the Warriors.
SB-L fell to 17-6 overall and 13-3 in the conference after the loss. Le Mars improved to 15-8 with the win, their fifth in a row, as they moved to 12-4 in conference games.
The two teams will meet in Le Mars for a doubleheader on July 1.
