Le Mars baseball drops games against tough competition

SIOUX CITY — The Le Mars baseball team fell to Class 4A No. 3 ranked Dowling Catholic in a neutral-site game at Briar Cliff University on Friday. The final score was 7-3 in favor of the Maroons.

Le Mars held a 3-0 lead through five innings before giving up seven runs in the sixth as the scoring for both teams came all in one turn at the plate. Chase Peterson, Carter Baumgartner and Kole Carpenter drove in the runs in the fourth for the Bulldogs.

Ayden Hoag pitched a shutout through the first five innings as he ended the game with three strikeouts, but the Maroons finally figured him out for six runs in the sixth before he reached his pitch count limit for the day. Cal Eckstaine gave up the last run as he pitched 2/3 of an inning.

Kaden Marson allowed the three runs to the Bulldogs in 3 1/3 innings. Evan Curran held the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way and earned the win on the mound.

Dowling improved to 16-7 with the win. Le Mars fell to 8-14 with the loss.

ORANGE CITY — The Le Mars baseball team faced another tough non-conference opponent Monday as they made the trip north to face MOC-Floyd Valley who entered the game with a 17-2 record.

Le Mars led 9-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Dutchmen broke the game open with 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 15-9 win.

Austin Oolman led the Dutchmen with a 4 RBI game as he was 3-for-4 with two singles and a double. Carter Aalbers added a 3 RBI game with a single and double. Kael Arends finished with four hits and Carson Jager knocked out three as they each ended with 2 RBI games.

Le Mars was led by four hits from Cal Eckstaine, two singles and two doubles. Ayden Hoag finished with 2 RBI for the Bulldogs in the game, tying for most on the team with Eckstaine, as he reached on a single and double.

Evan Pratt and Evan Jalas also had two hits with a single and double while Teagen Kasel contributed two base hits and a walk while driving in a run.

The Bulldogs scored seven of their nine runs against starter Jackson Van Den Bosch who lasted five innings. Luke Korver got the win in relief with the other two runs charged to him. Nikolai Wede struck out the side to finish out the game.

Pratt pitched five innings for the Bulldogs and gave up five runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits and three walks. He struck out two.

Trent Marienau took the loss with an additional five runs allowed while not recording an out. Three more runs scored against Brayden Dreckman and a pair of unearned runs were charged to Kole Carpenter.

MOC-Floyd Valley improved to 18-2 with the win. Le Mars fell to 9-15 with the loss.
