A-W takes down Trinity
AKRON — The Akron-Westfield baseball and softball teams earned wins over Trinity Christian on Friday in War Eagle Conference play.
The A-W baseball team celebrated 1,000 games played since Akron-Westfield was formed from the separate towns 40 years ago. The team was able to pick up a 12-2 win in six innings in front of the home crowd at Sargent Field.
Four players had two hits apiece for the Westerners. Leadoff batter Aric Allard reached on two singles, a walk and an error as he scored three times and drove in a run in the win. Raiden Ericson had a single and double and reached on a hit-by-pitch as he drove in a run. Tyson Fairbanks had two doubles and a walk while driving in a run. Jack Terpstra had the other multi-hit game with two singles as he led the team with 3 RBI.
Michael Swancutt and Conner Wendel added 2 RBI nights for the Westerners. They scored 10 of their runs, seven of which were earned, against starter Luke De Jong. Two more came home against Josh Kooiker.
Ericson pitched the win for the Westerners as he went 5 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits and five walks. He struck out three. Dustin Hoksbergen hit a double and drove in one of the runs for the Tigers. Alec DeBoer had the other RBI for the team.
The last out was recorded by Tatum Wilken.
The Westerners improved to 11-8 with the win. Trinity fell to 1-11 with the loss.
The Akron-Westfield softball team earned a 5-0 win over the Tigers.
Emma Rolfes pitched the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts in as many innings. She scattered five hits and a walk while keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Taryn Wilken led the team with a 2 RBI game as she had a pair of singles. Adding two hits apiece were Ciara Barron, who had two singles, and Megan Meinen, who reached on a single and triple.
Allie Swoyer added the other RBI as the other runs against Trinity pitcher Makiah De Jager were unearned.
Trinity fell to 2-10 with the loss. Akron-Westfield improved to 14-3 with the win.
