RSM softball wins ranked matchup over West Monona

ONAWA — It was a 10 inning battle between Class 1A No. 6 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s and Class 2A No. 9 ranked West Monona in non-conference action Thursday.

Both teams scored just one run in the regulation seven innings and it took until the top of the 10th for the Hawks to put up the winning runs as they scored four in the inning and held the Spartans one more time for a 5-1 win.

The Hawks filled the bases in the 10th with a walk and two bunt singles to begin the frame. Halle Galles was hit by a pitch to score the go-ahead run.

West Monona got the next two batters out as Mya Bunkers grounded into a fielder’s choice with the out being the force at home. Carmindee Ricke popped up and was called out on the infield fly rule.

The Hawks managed to push three more runs across with two outs as Jacie Homan walked home a run and two runners came home on wild pitches.

West Monona threatened in the bottom of the 10th with two singles to start the inning, but the Hawks got the next three batters out via ground outs as Marina Cronin finished her marathon 10-inning stint in the circle with the win. She ended up with two strikeouts and giving up an unearned run on seven hits and four walks throughout the contest.

Carly Miller took the loss as she worked seven innings and gave up all five of the runs. She ended with seven strikeouts. Brihanna Hill pitched three scoreless innings for the Spartans.

RSM scored their first run in the top of the fifth on an error after Claire Schroeder reached on a base hit to center field. West Monona tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as MaKayla Haynes reached on an error and Sierra Siebersma drove the runner home with a double.

Remsen St. Mary’s stays perfect with a 16-0 record after the win. West Monona dropped to 17-6 with the loss.
