Gehlen takes down Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in baseball, softball action
LE MARS/GRANVILLE ó Gehlen Catholic faced Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Wednesday and picked up wins in both softball and baseball action.
The Lady Jays hosted the Hawks at the Riverview Complex and came away with a 3-1 win.
Rylee Schnepf finished with 19 strikeouts in the win in the circle. She gave up just one run, which came in the top of the seventh, on four hits. Gracie Knobloch had the most luck against Schnepf with a pair of doubles as she scored the lone run and was the only one on the team to not get struck out by Schnepf. Eliza Tewes drove in the run with a single while Abigail Konzman had the other base hit for the Hawks.
Schnepf helped herself out at the plate with a pair of hits and a 2 RBI game. Larissa Pohlen had the teamís only other hit against Kamryn Ebel, a single, and drove in the other run.
Kenzi Alesch reached on a walk and scored one of the runs while Alyssa Kolbeck drew two free passes and scored the other two runs.
The win was the seventh in a row for the Jays who improved to 10-5. H-M-S fell to 5-10.
Baseball records shutout
The baseball team hosted the Hawks in Granville and won 8-0. The team scored in five of their six turns at the plate, failing to score only in the first inning.
Ryan Livermore led the team with a 3 RBI game as he hit a single and double and reached on a walk in the contest.
Carter Kellen added a 2 RBI game with a base hit. Connor Kraft, Keaton Logan and David Begnoche added two hits apiece. Kraft and Begnoche each had an RBI as they hit a single and double. Both of Loganís hits were singles to go along with a walk.
The team scored all of the runs against starter Jordan Ortega. Begnoche pitched the win for Gehlen with seven strikeouts in five innings. He gave up just two hits and one walk. Dylan Lehmann gave up just one hit while striking out two in two innings of relief.
Gehlen has won seven of their last eight games as they improved to 10-7. H-M-S fell to 2-11 with the loss.
