RSM softball wins ranked showdown over A-W
AKRON — In a rematch of last year’s regional final and a battle between Class 1A No. 7 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s and No. 13 ranked Akron-Westfield, it was the Hawks edging out a 4-3 win over the Westerners on Tuesday.
The Westerners scored the first run in the bottom of the second. The Hawks answered back for all four of their runs in the top of the third. The team reached on five straight singles to begin the third with two runs scoring on a single off the bat of Mya Bunkers. Another run came home on a ground out from Jacie Homan and the last run scored on a single from Octavia Galles.
A-W scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Chloee Colt drove in a run with a ground out and the other run came home on a wild pitch as Alyssa Nemesio and Makenzie Hughes reached base on singles earlier in the inning.
The Westerners got the leadoff runner on in the fifth and two runners on base in the sixth, but could not push across any more runs. Marina Cronin sent the Westerners down in order in their final at-bat in the seventh. Cronin pitched the complete game win with four strikeouts.
Megan Meinen took the loss as she gave up all four runs while throwing six innings. She struck out four in her time in the circle. Emma Rolfes pitched an inning of relief.
Remsen St. Mary’s improved to 9-0 with the win. Akron-Westfield dropped to 9-2 with the loss as both of their losses have been by one run.
