HINTON — For the second time this season, the Hinton and Gehlen Catholic basketball teams split their doubleheader.

In Tuesday’s meeting, the Lady Blackhawks came away with a 63-46 win in the regular season finale for both teams. Hinton had won the first meeting of the season by a 60-59 score on a buzzer beater from Kyra Peters.

The Blackhawks got out to a 14 point lead at halftime before the Jays cut into that in the third quarter, getting to within seven entering the final quarter. Hinton was able to pull away for the win in the fourth by outscoring their opponent 21-11.

Hinton was led by Anna Coffee who scored 19 points. Bella Badar added 18 and Ashlyn Kovarna also reached double digits with 13.

Gehlen had three in double digits as Rachel Langel and Miyah Whitehead were each a rebound short of a double-double. Langel ended with 11 points while Whitehead scored 10. Lauren Heying added another 10 points to go along with a team-best seven assists and three steals.

Both teams end the War Eagle Conference season with 5-5 records. Hinton finished with a 10-10 regular season record while Gehlen wrapped up the regular season with a 10-11 mark.

The Class 1A No. 5 ranked Gehlen boys managed to wrap up a perfect War Eagle Conference season with a 69-65 win over Hinton.

The Jays had a comfortable 13 point lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Blackhawks made their rival sweat it out to the very end as they rallied in the fourth.

The game was much closer than the 75-49 Gehlen win at the beginning of January.

Carter DeRocher and Keaten Bonderson put up nearly identical shooting lines for the Jays as they both made 11 field goals including two triples. DeRocher was the leading scorer by one point thanks to an extra free throw make as he finished with 26 points.

Zach Kraft was the team’s other double digit scorer as he posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Caleb Holmes had nearly half of Hinton’s points as he scored 32. Landon Lovrien added a 16 point, 11 rebound double-double while also leading the way with four blocked shots.

Hinton fell to 8-12 overall and 3-7 in WEC play. Gehlen finishes 10-0 in the conference and have now won 12 in a row as they are 19-1 overall.
