A-W girls, RSM boys get wins
AKRON ó The Akron-Westfield girls and Remsen St. Maryís boys basketball teams claimed wins in action Tuesday.
The Lady Westerners secured their sixth win in a row as they edged the Hawks 44-41. The team hasnít lost a game since falling to the Hawks by a 57-51 score in Remsen on Dec. 15.
Natalie Nielsen scored a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. She also led the Westerners with five steals and four blocks.
Elise Knapp was a point shy of her own double-double as she brought down 10 rebounds. She had the teamís other two blocked shots.
Mya Bunkers was the top scorer for the Hawks as she finished with 10 points. Brittany Johnson added nine points for the team in what was their lowest scoring output of the season.
Both teams saw their records stand at 8-5 following the game.
The A-W boys held a 21-17 lead at the end of the first quarter against Class 1A No. 7 ranked RSM, but it was almost all in favor of the Hawks after that as they pulled away for an 83-42 win.
A subpar shooting night from 3-point range at 4-of-17 by the Hawks was made up by a 25-of-32 mark at the free-throw line as eight different players scored points at the charity stripe.
Austin Jensen led the team with a double-double as he scored 16 points and grabbed 18 rebounds. He added four assists and three steals.
Carter Schorg added 16 points of his own along with seven rebounds. Jaxon Bunkers ended with 14 points while Blaine Harpenau and Levi Waldschmitt finished with nine apiece.
Statistics for the Westerners were unavailable at press time.
RSM improved to 12-1 with the win while the Westerners fell to 1-11 with the loss.
