Jays split games with West Sioux
LE MARS ó The Gehlen Catholic basketball teams split their contests with West Sioux on Friday.
The Class 1A No. 8 ranked Gehlen boys team won their game by a 60-47 score which was a larger margin of victory than the teamís four point road win over the Falcons back in December.
The Falcons had a slight edge over the last three quarters, but a nice start for the Jays, getting out to a 22-6 lead after a quarter, provided enough cushion for the win.
Keaten Bonderson finished with a double-double, leading the team with 22 points and adding 10 rebounds. Carter DeRocher dropped 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Zach Kraft pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds while scoring six points.
After failing to reach 10 wins last season for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign, Gehlen hit the double digit mark with a month left in the regular season as they are now 10-1 on the year.
The Lady Jays dropped to 7-5 on the season in a disappointing 43-24 loss. The team was held to just 11 points through the first three quarters before opening up some in the fourth with more points than the first three frames combined.
The 24 points were the fewest scored by the Jays in a game since a 61-18 loss to Akron-Westfield in December 2016.
Megan Waterman led the Falcons as she single-handedly outscored the Jays with 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting.
Gehlen shot just 16 percent from the field in the loss.
Lauren Heying topped the Jays with 10 points. Rachel Langel and Jayden Barthole had five points apiece.
West Sioux has won both meetings this season after a 54-46 victory in December.
The Gehlen teams will return to action Friday at Akron-Westfield in War Eagle Conference action.
