K-P, MMCRU advance to play each other
KINGSLEY/MARCUS — The Kingsley-Pierson and MMCRU volleyball teams will meet Wednesday after both teams won their respective first round Class 1A regional matches by sweeps on Monday.
The Panthers swept their Western Valley Conference foe River Valley for the second time this season as they came away with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-13 win. It is the 11th consecutive win for K-P in the series dating back to the 2016 season.
It was a balanced attacking night from the Panthers as McKenzie Goodwin and Chloe Peschau led the way with nine kills apiece. Rachel Bohle was one behind that total.
Hayden Dunne distributed 16 assists while Emy Benson added 10.
The Panthers had a strong defensive outing as well. Goodwin finished with eight blocks while Benson, Peschau and Brooklyn Beery had three apiece. Abbi Bailey and Shayley Haggin led the back row with double digits in digs as Bailey finished with 15 and Haggin had 10.
Anna Bubke had a slow hitting night with just two kills, but led the way with three ace serves. Goodwin had the only other ace for the team in the match.
MMCRU opened the postseason with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-8 win over Woodbury Central. The two teams did not face each other in the regular season.
Jaylen Bork ended with over half of MMCRU’s kills with 21 of the team’s 40. She hit .447 for the match. Bork added eight digs and two blocks defensively and tied Kirsten Letsche for the team lead with two ace serves.
Letsche doled out 15 assists, second behind Taylor Harpenau in their dual-setter rotation.
Ellie Hilbrands got seven kills off those set assists while Regan Peters added five kills. Emily Dreckman tacked on four kills and led the way with three blocks.
Hilbrands led the defense with 12 digs as she had one more than Harpenau.
It will be a matchup of 20-win teams on Wednesday as the 20-10 Panthers will visit the 20-5 Royals.
The two teams met once during the regular season, a five-set match which the Royals won.
