HARTLEY — Akron-Westfield dropped their fifth consecutive game as Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn reached at least 50 points for the second straight week in a 50-18 win over the Westerners in Class A District 1 action Friday.

A high-scoring first half saw the Hawks double up the Westerners 36-18. The Hawks added two fourth quarter touchdowns, but A-W’s offense stalled out in the second half.

The Westerners got the offense back on track some after their shutout loss to South O’Brien the week prior as Cade Walkingstick was able to throw for three touchdowns. Lane Kenny caught two touchdown passes as he hauled in nine catches for 111 yards. Sam Mullinix added three grabs for 60 yards and the other score. Mullinix added 60 rushing yards on 20 carries.

Walkingstick ended the night 16-of-36 passing for 235 yards. Along with his three touchdown passes, he was also intercepted three times including twice by Connor Dodd who returned one for a touchdown.

The Westerners got a couple turnovers of their own on defense with fumble recoveries for Landon Vossberg and Jacob Hankins. Tanner Derochie led the defense with nine tackles.

Still, the Westerners struggled to contain the rushing attack of the Hawks as they scored six touchdowns and gained nearly 400 yards.

Travis Kamradt led the Hawks with 165 rushing yards on 25 carries. He had one touchdown which covered 60 yards. Quarterback Kooper Ebel was just a yard behind Kamradt in rushing yardage with 164 yards on 15 carries as he averaged nearly 11 yards per rush. He scored three rushing touchdowns in the game. Dodd added two rushing scores as he touched the ball six times for 34 yards.

H-M-S improves to 4-2 overall and is 3-1 in district play.

The Westerners fall to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in district games. A-W will try to bookend their regular season with wins as MMCRU is scheduled to visit Friday.
