Local volleyball teams compete at Alta-Aurelia
ALTA/AURELIA ó Three local volleyball squads were in attendance at a tournament hosted by Alta-Aurelia on Saturday.
Akron-Westfield beat the other two local schools at the event as they earned 2-1 wins over MMCRU and Remsen St. Maryís.
The win over the Royals avenged the conference loss which came 11 days prior. MMCRU won the first set 21-18 while the Westerners edged out even closer wins in the second and third by 21-19 and 15-13 scores.
Molly Vondrak returned to her setting spot for A-W and had all but one of the teamís 15 assists. She had a hand in Natalie Nielsenís team-best six kills and Aubie Hartmanís five kills.
Hartman led the team with three aces followed by Vondrak and McKenna Henrich with two apiece.
Jaylen Bork had 11 kills to lead the Royals while Ellie Hilbrands finished with eight. No one else on the team had more than one.
Kora Alesch ended with three ace serves while Hilbrands and Taylor Harpenau had two apiece. Harpenau had 16 of the teamís 21 set assists.
The Westerners also lost the first set to Remsen St. Maryís 21-18, but came back with wins of 24-22 and 15-12 to claim that match.
Nielsen had nine kills to pace A-W, followed by six for Aubie Hartman and five for Taryn Wilken.
A balanced RSM squad had Lexie Delperdang, Brittany Johnson, Carly Ortmann and Claire Schroeder collect five kills apiece.
Johnson added three ace serves while Delperdang and Sydney Schroeder had two each. Sydney Schroeder had 20 of the teamís 24 assists.
A-W added a 21-13, 21-17 win over winless GT/RA with Taryn Wilken scoring six kills while Hartman and Nielsen had five apiece.
The teamís only loss came to the host in a 21-14, 21-15 defeat. The Westerners managed just six total kills in that match with Nielsen recording half of them. Taryn Wilken had three ace serves.
Aside from their loss to A-W, MMCRU went 3-0 against the rest of the competition. The Royals topped RSM 21-8, 21-19 as Bork had six kills and Hilbrands added five. Bork also had three ace serves.
The Hawks were limited to just five kills with Ortmann scoring three of them. Sydney Schroeder had two aces while Halle Galles and Delperdang each had one.
The Royals won 21-7, 21-15 over GT/RA as Bork and Hilbrands had five kills apiece. Autumn Bonnstetter added three in as many attempts. Kora Alesch served up six aces in the win.
MMCRU edged out a 21-19 win over Alta-Aurelia in the first and pulled away for a 21-13 win to complete the sweep. Bork hit .308 with nine kills and Hilbrands hit .263 with seven kills as the only players with multiple kills on the roster. Harpenau had four of the teamís six aces and set up 12 of 18 assists.
RSM went 1-1 in the other matches after dropping a 21-9, 21-9 match to Alta-Aurelia and beating GT/RA 21-7, 21-8.
RSM ended the day with a 7-10 record for the season while MMCRU moved to 16-4 and Akron-Westfield saw their record change to 8-6.
