REMSEN — Class 1A No. 2 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s picked up a district final win over Trinity Christian at Marv Thelen Memorial Field on Saturday, July 18. The Hawks won 5-0 to shut out the Tigers for the second time this season after also doing so in the regular season meeting by a 9-0 final.

Blaine Harpenau reached on a single and came home to score on an error in the bottom of the first in what would end up being the only run the team would need in the contest. The Hawks did add four insurance runs in the fifth inning. Skylar Waldschmitt drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, another run scored on a wild pitch, and Jaxon Bunkers drove in a pair on a single as the Hawks pulled away in the inning.

Trinity got the leadoff man on in each of the first three innings, but couldn’t capitalize, lining into a double play in the first and then striking out three times in each of the next two frames against Carter Schorg, part of his eight strikeouts in the contest. Blaine Harpenau added three strikeouts on the four batters he faced and Skyler Waldschmitt threw the final inning of scoreless relief.

Dawson Vis took the loss for the Tigers with all five runs charged to him. Trinity concludes the season with an 8-7 record. Remsen St. Mary’s will take an 18-0 mark into the substate final which will be held at the Riverview Complex in Le Mars on Tuesday, July 21. They will seek their fifth consecutive state berth as they go up against Newell-Fonda (16-2).

Newell-Fonda’s lone losses came in the final week of the regular season against Coon Rapids-Bayard, a team who lost in the district final to Kingsley-Pierson’s substate opponent, Logan-Magnolia, and Pocahontas Area, who is playing Dike-New Hartford in a 2A substate final.

The Hawks and Mustangs were scheduled to play during the regular season, but that game was canceled. The Mustangs won the last meeting in 2019 by a 4-1 score.
