RSM baseball tops Gehlen

REMSEN — Class 1A No. 2 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s didn’t need extra innings this time around against rival Gehlen Catholic as the Hawks won 9-1 to advance to the district final.

Blaine Harpenau threw six scoreless innings for the Hawks as he struck out 10 and allowed just three hits. Gehlen picked up their only run in the seventh as Skyler Waldschmitt came on in relief. Treagan Kramer had the pinch-hit RBI.

RSM scored in the second on a ground out and added three more in the third on two hits and three errors. Xavier Galles made it 6-0 with a 2 RBI double in the fifth. Jeremy Koenck followed with an RBI single and RBI ground outs from Carter Schorg and Brady Homan made it 9-0.

Derek Von Arb took the loss for the Jays with four unearned runs coming home in his three innings.

The Jays finish the season with a 3-6 record and will say goodbye to seniors Ethan Peters, Brady Alesch, Isaac Vaske and Bergen Vacura.

RSM improves to 17-0 on the season and will host Trinity Christian in Saturday’s (July 18) district final. The Hawks won 9-0 in their meeting with the Tigers earlier this season.
