MMCRU softball hangs on against HMS after good start
REMSEN — A four-run first inning put the MMCRU softball team in the driver’s seat and they held on the rest of the way for a 6-5 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in War Eagle Conference action Wednesday, July 8.
“I think we were really looking to hit the ball hard which we did, we just hit it at them a lot,” MMCRU Head Coach Kayla Means said. “Like I tell the girls, you keep hitting, they’ll find the gaps.”
The Hawks got one across in the top of the first inning before the Royals answered. Kaelee Letsche pulled multiple balls out of play foul before finally straightening one out for an RBI double to left-center to tie the game at 1-1.
Molly Reuter helped her own cause in the circle by sending an RBI single down the left field line to put her team in front. Caitlyn Evans followed with an RBI single over the shortstop’s head, one of the hits on her 3-for-3 night, and she made it to third on an error which brought home another run.
The Royals tacked on another run in each of the next two innings before Taya Mason came on in relief of Trey Haag and held the team scoreless the rest of the game.
Reuter pitched the complete game win with three of the five runs she allowed being earned. She walked one and struck out one in the game.
MMCRU improved to 3-5 with the win as all of their wins have come since returning from a two-week COVID-19 quarantine. Means said her girls are just excited to have the opportunity to compete once again.
“We started off our first half of the season with some tough competition too which I think made us that much better for the second half of our season,” Means said. “I think the girls were ready to come back and they realized how much they enjoy playing and being around each other.
MMCRU will gear up for a rematch with Remsen St. Mary’s in the first round of regionals on Monday, July 13. The Royals handed RSM their first loss of the season in MMCRU’s return to action, winning by a 6-0 score.
“Going into the tournament, we’re just looking to hit the ball well and play good defense,” Means said. “I think it’s going to be a competitive rematch. Just being rival schools in general, that brings out the competitors in each other. The girls are excited to get the chance to play them again and have that high-intensity game.”
