Gehlen, RSM split WEC rivalry games

LE MARS — The Gehlen Catholic baseball team gave undefeated and No. 2 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s a scare, but the Hawks survived the upset attempt, winning 7-3 in eight innings in War Eagle Conference action Wednesday, July 8.

Gehlen forced extra innings by scoring a run on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The Jays had the winning run at third but Skyler Waldschmitt got Ryan Livermore to ground out to end the inning.

RSM then scored four runs in the top of the eighth. Jaxon Bunkers led off the frame with a double and Xavier Galles singled with an error bringing the first run home. The Jays got two outs before a bases-clearing double from Spencer Schorg broke the game open. Waldschmitt finished the game by striking out the side in the eighth, earning the win with three innings of relief following the start from Bunkers.

Gehlen held the early lead with Keaton Logan leading off the home half of the first with a home run. Zach Kraft added an RBI double in the second. RSM tied the game with a two-out pop fly error in the fourth and went ahead 3-2 in the seventh on a pair of doubles from Brady Homan and Blaine Harpenau.

The RSM softball team dropped just their second game of the season as the Lady Jays came away with a 4-1 win.

All four Gehlen runs scored in the fifth on two walks, two hits and two errors. Bunts from Alyssa Kolbeck and Sydney Livermore brought in the first two runs with a double from Chloe Bunkers scoring those two.

A sacrifice fly from Ashley Willman brought home RSM’s lone run in the sixth.

Rylee Schnepf picked up the win for Gehlen, giving up three hits and one walk while striking out four.

Marina Cronin ended with the loss. She struck out seven, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and three walks.

The RSM softball team fell to 9-2 on the season entering their next-to-last game Thursday, July 9.

The RSM baseball team ended the regular season with a perfect 15-0 record entering Saturday’s (July 11) district opener at home against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.
